Children Should be Seen, Not Heard

Last week, the man who was my Dad at the most crucial stage of my life was buried. For those years he was my Dad, and, of all the types of dads on the Earth, he was the best, looking back. Hindsight is always 20-20.

I am reminded tonight of an often heard phase around our home back then. Actually, several; ‘children should be seen, not heard’; ‘down in front!’, ‘you make a better door than a window!’, ‘what, are you writing a book?’. In my mind, I always answered that last one, “Yeah, it’s called ‘Jerks in Questioning’”.

Those were the best years of my life.

I didn’t know how to start this blog, for days, since I first heard he was terminal, I wanted to say something… to let the world now how I felt, but I just couldn’t figure it out how. I loved him, and I hated him, I was the step-kid after all, for those few years. And, when he finally left, it tore me up that I could not attend his funeral. As it turns out, he was a huge part of my life.

I watched a movie tonight that touched me in a way that connected me to that past. Imagine a world where children really didn’t make a noise, as though they didn’t even exist at all. What kind of world would that be?

It’s British though. So, you have been warned.

Anyway, I rented this movie because it is an older film, and thus cheaper to rent. And, to make matters more chaotic, I rent picks based on run-time, the longer the movie, the more likely I am to pay to watch it.

So, the movie that sparked this review, is titled ‘Children of Men’. Like I said, it is a British film, and it is not what I expected at all, having heard nothing of it before renting.

To me, the movie takes the most annoying sound in the world, and shows it be the most beautiful sound ever made. A sound that you can only appreciate, as such, having never heard it before. Ever.

The acting is awesome. There are a few well-known stars, Julianne Moore, Michael Caine, Clive Owen (no immediate known relation), and Chiwetel Ejiofor. They all perform more perfectly than can be expected. My hat, so to speak, is off to all the other stars, producers, and whatnot for this movie. It is, in my opinion, a must-own film, nd, I will own it.
